- The jaws are tightened with a snap-spin of the hand wheel in a counter clockwise direction. The snap-spin is repeated until the operator is sure the pipe is held securely.

- Engage the pipe cutter with the pipe, and align the cutter wheel with the mark you have made when measuring the pipe.
- Rest the frame of the pipe cutter on the support bar. Tighten the screw feed handle.

- The ends are squarely cut
- The pipe fits smoothly on the driving roll
- Steps have been taken to grind down any internal or external weld beads or seams that may interfere with the grooving operation
- Burrs, coarse scale, rust, and other irregularities have been removed.
- The stand is positioned in line with the axis of the driving roll and three-quarters of the pipe length away from the driving roll flange.
- First, fit the pipe on the driving roll so that the end of the pipe is against the flange of the driving roll. Next, after making adjustments to the support stand (if used), adjust the pipe so that it is in contact with the roll flange on one side only.
